Oahu...Day 17 and 18 Hanama Bay/Ko'Olina & Friday our last day.....

Thursday, May 24, 2012

We arrived here at 8:30.  I had forgotten just how beautiful this bay is.   We brought our own gear, watched the movie and walked down to the water.    Some people  brought so much stuff they are obviously here for most of the day.   It's not my favorite area to snorkel  but it's definitely gorgeous

I'm not sure where we had lunch, but it wasn't any place exciting.  From here we left for Aulani. We're huge Disney fans so even though we'll never stay there, we wanted to see it.  It's gorgeous, but not for me....not in Hawaii.

Unlike other Disney resorts, if you want to stay any length of time here, You have to pay to park .  They gave us  a little time.... either a half or full hour, but that's it.  So we hustled around to check it out.

We left Aulani and drove a bit in the Ko'Olina area and stopped at the Beach Park for awhile.  John did a little snorkeling and I just relaxed.   Pretty soon a bride came and I watched them take a bunch of photos.   Seems like I've seen at least a half dozen weddings while in Hawaii.

When we left Ko'Olina we drove north a bit more up the leeward side and stopped at some fast food for a bite to eat.  I would have liked to have gotten up to Makaha area but we needed to turn around.  I found out what I wanted ... I 'll keep staying in Waikiki while I'm on Oahu.

I'm not sure if I've ever been to Hilo Hatties before ...so we made a stop and dropped a few dollars.
Hilo Hatties

A few photos of the Ilikai
I think McGarrett stood on top of this hotel in the opening of the original Hawaii 5- 0

Ilikai Pool

If I looked to my left away from the ocean I saw the roof top of the Hilton where they hold their luau

Someone asked about our condo so here are  more pictures inside and the view...

Not in focus but you can see what the room is like.. I'm standing by two queen size beds

Next we're going to House Without a Key for  appetizers and drinks.   A day or so ago, we happened to be at Costco sitting outside at the same picnic table with a couple of really nice locals.     We got to chatting ( John had a Disney hat on ..it's always a conversation starter...(Disney that is) and turns out he plays the bass ( I think it's called that) in a trio there.  It was already on my list to go so I told him we'd see him there  Thursday.    Here's our picture..I forget his name so if anyone here knows it please tell me.

Somehow I didn't get a picture of the lovely lady who was performing an awesome hula dance.

A comment about a lei led to a fun time with this group next to us..

After we tore ourselved away from here we decided to walk Kalakaua Blvd.. It's very pretty at night with lots of twinkly lights.

Wasn't expecting to see a shooting range here..

Friday,  May 18  Our last day... time to head home.

It's our last day so this morning I walked the marina and was soaking up the atmosphere.  Our check out time was 11:am  so I still had a some time to enjoy the area.

Saw some interesting boats here

Looks like getting off/on the boat will be a little difficult here.

Saw a google car at the marina..

It was nice watching all the morning activity at this sections of the beach.   Alot of people came on this end to surf this morning.

Check out was 11 am and our flight was around 5.  Our plans were to drop off our luggage which we did and then go have a nice lunch.  My choice was The Willows, but after talking to the folks last night, they said go to Uncles Fish Market so we did.  It was ok,  but nothing outstanding..  The ambiance at The Willows was the reason I wanted to go there... so next time for sure.   However, my bloody mary was really good!

We bought food for the plane even though we just ate and at the last minute I decided I needed a real lei.  Oh my gosh it smelled soooo good that I was wishing I had bought more before this.  I kept it in the refrigerator when I got home and just took it out to smell now and then.  I love them!

Final words on the trip..I loved every minute of it.  We  had a great mix of everything we like!!  No regrets! John even got to liking Oahu... still loves Kauai more, but he had fun like I told him he would.  It may have been long ago, but  I've never forgotten  how jet lagged  I was after the old trip s and how I felt crappy for a couple weeks.  This time I felt great and I guess I attribute it to always  rising early and early to bed.    I simply can't wait until we return but this time it won't be so long.

Oahu.. Day 16 of 18 Waikiki Beach, Punchbowl, Tantalus

Opened the curtains to see a Rainbow this morning...how delightful

This morning we  decided to take a walk and we started down the beach.    It's a bit of a walk around the pond to get to there,  but I don't mind it.   I wasn't sure I'd like it since I stayed at HHV my other trips,  but  I'm very happy staying at the Ilikai.   I've found that I love having a condo.

On the way to the Pink Palace I heard the blowing of a conch shell..  I love hearing this as the boat comes in to shore to pick up passengers.  Such a cool sound.

I took a walk around the Pink Palace.. love this elegant lady..  I remember my first trip here, there was a long drive from Kalakaua to the Royal.  I think I was told back then there were about 25 acres of property here.  Well, the next trip I remember walking down Kalakaua and I couldn't find the Pink Lady.  That's when I realize a shopping center had been built in front of it.   Such a shame but it's all about the money.    I  hope the day never comes when I have to look really hard to find any history here.   During my last trip to Gatlinburg, I asked at the visitors center if there were any remaining historic sites in downtown and theres only a teeny tiny cabin.  Such a shame.

I've read so much about this place, but never got to eat here...

Stopped here for  a breakfast sandwich

Walked along The Waikiki Historic Trail and read alot of interesing history on these surfboards.

The Army Museum is quite interesting and has a bit of everything...

I really missed seeing him this year...

Thank heavens the wrecking ball couldn't knock it down!!

Even Elvis is there!

This is probably the most famous and most beautiful National Cemetary.

The mosaics are beautiful and there are several!!

Look at the picture below to see how beautiful the drive in is... They were setting up for a Memorial Weekend Ceremony

If you have a friend or family here this would help you locate their site.

After leaving Punchbowl, we drove around town a bit.  I wanted to check out the Jams World outlet store where I only bought a couple small items.  They really didn't have any patterns I loved in the dresses and they were still a bit pricey although cheaper than my stores here.  I looked for a shop that carries men's aloha shirts but could not find it.  John wears them in Florida all the time and as a difficult time finding talls.

After we were finished shopping, somehow we ended up here... Mount Tantalus and Round Top Drive... Gorgeous Views

In the movie, Blue Hawaii, Elvis is sitting here having a picnic with a girl.  I'd like to see  the movie now, so I can compare the sky lines.

We drove around town a bit then headed  back to the Elks Club for dinner.  Love this place...
